Chachka is a word I'm sure you've seen tossed around more than a few design blogs, including this one, and perhaps we've left you wondering.."What exactly is a chachka"?
There are several popular definitions for the yiddish term (also spelled "tchotchke") such as:
- A useless trinket
- Free promotional material...or...
- A cheap or tacky woman
The definition that we, at Atmosphere, have in mind when referring to chachkas would most likely be this: "Things considered to be worth collecting & displaying but not necessarily valuable or antique" (although, if they are valuable and antique - that's okay too).
Of course, there are so many wonderful things that fall under this delightfully-loose definition, it's hard to remain composed when considering the possibilities.
So, if you are a level headed person and wish to focus on one or two "types" of chachka, here are some of our favorites:
- Containers/Vases
- Coffee Table Books
- Little Decorative Knick Knacks (a whole different term)
- Sculpture.
Black & White Talavera Vazquez Zig Zag Vase - Emilia Ceramics
Parisian Interiors - by Barbara & Rene Stoeltie
Jonathan Adler's - Mr. and Mrs. Muse Salt & Pepper Shakers
They likely won't be sitting out on the coffee table, but if these aren't collectable...what is?!?
Jonathan Adler - Brass Dora Maar
Another great Jonathan Adler Piece (and more appropriate for the coffee table).
